Whitgift School is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr David Cresswell, MA (Oxon) FRSA as the School’s new Senior Deputy.

Whitgift School Headmaster Mr Chris Ramsey said of the appointment, “We are delighted to welcome David as the latest in a distinguished line of Whitgift Deputies. His role will be to oversee the implementation of our Whitgift 2025 vision, and he takes over at a very exciting time”

Mr Cresswell joins Whitgift from Barnard Castle School in County Durham where, for three years, he was one of three Deputy Heads with strategic and operational overview of the running of the school, as well as a member of SMT. In his previous role he had oversight for Sixth Form; Admissions and UCAS as well as running the Oxbridge programme.

He read Modern Foreign Languages at Oxford University and was captain of the Oxford University hockey team, also playing in the German Bundesliga. He also acted in the university dramatic society. Prior to his role at Barnard Castle he worked for seven years as Head of German and Deputy Housemaster at Radley College, Oxfordshire, and a drama and languages teacher at Cranleigh School.

He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce (FRSA) and has led projects on promoting democracy in education in the North East.

Of the appointment Mr Cresswell said: “I have been lucky enough to work at some wonderful independent schools throughout my career, but none that have the potential transformational nature of education at Whitgift for boys from a diverse range of backgrounds. The school provides a stunning breadth of opportunity for the brightest and most talented boys from across London, Surrey and the world. When walking down the halls, I notice that the boys have a determined steeliness, and I love that this is combined with a genuine undercurrent of humility and kindness. Simply put, I cannot wait to get started!”

He replaces Mr Peter Ellis who served as Second Master for the past 6 years, as well as being an Alumnus, and who is relocating overseas with his family.
