Students from Old Palace of John Whitgift School were very excited to welcome the 2012 winner of BBC Young Musician of the Year, Laura Van Der Heijden, along with principal cellist of the London Mozart Players, Sebastian Comberti.

The two cellists played to all the girls in Years 6 and 7 on Wednesday 27 January and talked to them about the life of a professional musician, the importance of practice and what it was like to win the BBC Young Musician of the Year.

The rest of the morning was devoted to workshops and masterclasses with Old Palace cellist students. Old Palace girls received specialist help with aspects of their technique from Laura, whilst Sebastian coached the other cellists in two cello ensembles.

The morning ended with a performance by all eleven cellists to their parents of the work they had been preparing that morning.
